The Vaccine We Actually Need
Which would you choose? A vaccine that ended all bullying, rejection, and “othering”. Or a vaccine that made you unshakable — So that no insult, circumstance, or life event could disturb your inner peace? Most of us would choose the latter. The interesting thing is that such immunity already exist within us.
Why We Suffer: The Stories We Tell
Consider this: all events are neutral until they are interpreted.
As Shakespeare wrote, “There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” What we experience as suffering is often not the event itself, but the meaning our mind assigns to it.
Our brains are designed to do this.
Long before we become consciously aware of a situation, ancient survival systems are scanning for danger and generating thoughts, emotions, and reactions. This serves us well when facing physical threats. But those same systems also react to threats to our identity, reputation, beliefs, and self-image, even when no actual danger exists.
The result is that we suffer not from what happens, but from the stories we create about what just happened.
The Witness: Stepping Back From the Story
Freedom begins when we notice this process.
We begin to witness thoughts instead of becoming lost in them. We notice sensations arising in the body. We observe emotions appearing and disappearing.
And gradually a profound question emerges: Who is aware of all of this? Thoughts come and go. Feelings come and go. Experiences come and go. Yet something remains.
There is an awareness that knows every thought, every feeling, every experience. It was present in childhood. It is present now. It is present in waking, dreaming, and deep sleep. And if we look closely, we may discover that this awareness has never been harmed by anything it has witnessed.
Coming Home to the Self
This does not deny the pain of our past. It does not dismiss trauma, loss, or abuse. It simply invites us to investigate something deeper.
Right now, as you read these words, can the awareness reading them be damaged by them? Can any sentence written here injure the awareness that reads it?
Look carefully. As the witnessing presence, you have never been wounded by any experience.
As this presence, every joy and sorrow is met with equanimity,
Every event recognized as inherently neutral
And in seeing events as they are rather than our story, creative responses come to us as if from the situation itself.
And in this understanding, something feels fresh and familiar. Like something we have always known.
It is our ‘Self’!
